  India reached seventh position in the internet population and 3.2 crore Indians are now accessing internet despite low broadband penetration. Google India is now among the “Top 15” websites in the world due to this sudden spurt in internet usage in India. Google is now the number one internet property in the world with 77% reach while Yahoo is gradually losing the grip over internet.  Top 5 internet properties:  1. Google sites: 77% reach 2. Microsoft sites: 64% reach 3. Yahoo sites: 55% reach. Are you still using Yahoo mail? 4. AOL: 27% reach with little international presence. 5. Wikemedia: Power of community.  Top 7 countries in internet reach:  1. China: 1 in every 6 internet user is from China.  2. USA: 1 every 7 internet user is from America.  3. Japan: 6% of internet population are from Japan.  4. Germany: This country represents 3.7% of internet population.  5. Britain: 3.6 crore internet users are from UK.  6. France: 3.4 crore internet users from France.  7. India: Just 3.2 crore Indians access internet. India represents 3.2% of internet population. But India will reach 3rd position within 1 year, according to estimates.  If Indian Government aggressively encourages broadband deployment, India will easily reach 3rd position in internet population.   Blogging platform of Google, Blogger celebrated 8th anniversary by introducing video uploads. Blogger was launched by Pyra Labs on August 23, 1999 and it was acquired by Google in 2003. Google recently enhanced this Wordpress alternative with new enhancements and easy customisation features by introducing new Blogger. Blogger is the 14th popular site according to Alexa ranking.  Blogger makeover from 1999-2007: Comparison of Blogger and Wordpress: Blogger is a simple publishing tool enjoying huge popularity among non-technocrats while Wordpress is more popular among high end users who want full control over its publishing tool. Unlimited storage from Yahoo Mail

  Yahoo announced unlimited E-Mail storage for its both beta and normal users starting in May onwards. This is the 10th anniversary gift from yahoo mail for its users. Yahoo mail was launched in 1997 with 4MB storage space. Yahoo Mail increased storage space to 100MB in 2004 and 1GB in 2005.   Gmail is giving stiff completion to Yahoo mail with lot of useful features. Microsoft missed the boat with its snail mail i.e; Hotmail.  Top E-Mail providers:  1. Yahoo Mail – 250 million users2. Live or Hot Mail – 228 million users 3. Gmail – 51 million users. Money will be refunded to premium customers of Yahoo mail if they request it. Users will be banned if they abuse this service. India’s NO.1 E-Mail service provider Rediff.com recently offered unlimited email storage. In future, storage is not going to be criterion for opting email service, it will entirely depend on quality of service, features and customization. 10 changes in my internet life during 2003-2007

  I am a physician from India who has been following the technology industry for the past 4 years. Users are gradually moving from desktop applications to internet rich applications. Web 2.0 sites are on the rise. Blogging has reached phenomenal heights.  2003:  1. I browsed from internet cafés on slow dial up connections.    2. My net usage was 20 hours per week. 3. I never heard the words “Blog”, “Digg” and “You tube”.    4. My primary email was Yahoo and secondary one was Hotmail.    5. Primary search engine was Google.    6. I spent 40% of my browsing time on Yahoo, 15% on Google, 15% on MSN networks.     7. Email took about 40% of my net usage.  8. Microsoft was a giant at that time.9. E Donkey was my major P2P application.10. Internet explorer was my major browser.2007:     1. I am surfing internet from my home on broad band connection.    2. My net usage is 100 hours per week.    3. I am maintaining 24 blogs and 1 website. Digg is my primary source for technology news.4. My primary email is Gmail. Yahoo mail is my secondary one.    4. Primary search engine is Google.   5. I am spending 40% of my surfing time on Google, 40% on web 2.0 sites and 10% on Yahoo and MSN networks.  6. Blogging accounts for 40% of my browsing time.7.   Internet usage is gradually increasing in India with Broadband penetration. Companies are sweating out to get more user eye balls. Why technocrats hate Microsoft – Physician’s doubt!?

    I am a physician from Andhra Pradesh, India. I am following technology trends since 1998. But I am unable to understand one thing that is why advanced users hate Microsoft?       I have seen lot of posts on Microsoft bashing in various forums. While most of users are addicted to microsoft products like windows and internet explorer, advanced users are advising Linux and Firefox. Whether it is arrogance of advanced users or ignorance of normal users?  My opinion is intermediate one. Microsoft products are easy to use and somewhat addictive. But Microsoft is less innovative but very good at marketing.  Though of late, Google is on steroids and Microsoft is on Opioids, Microsoft is still way ahead of competitors.  My request to Bill Gates:  Please lower windows price to penetrate technology in third world countries. It is small incentive you pay for normal users who still ignoring advice of advanced users.   … [Read more...]
