With the advent of internet, e-learning has now become a familiar name. It is beyond argument that education shapes and influences a person's life and plays a very big role in his or her career. Opportunities for educating oneself are abound but there are some less fortunate who may not have the opportunity and infrastructure to achieve the education they desire. But the internet has brought people very close together such that the desired education is within the reaching distance of everyone. This has fuelled a sudden spurt in the growth of e-learning and there are many trends that contribute and fan their further growth. e-Learning is particularly helpful for those who are geographically remote and hence, do not have access to the educational campus very easily. When a basic knowledge of computer and internet is there, anyone can opt for e-learning and the advancement in information like multimedia, browser technology and media capability have really contributed to the basic infrastructure in e-learning. This enables real-time online e-learning and offers a chance to get individualized attention and thus enhance their knowledge. The major driving force behind the growth of e-learning is the workplaces or offices that encourage their staff to further their educational background through e-learning. For instance, companies and institutions face stiff competition from their counterparts and are always forced to stay on top of the competition. Thus, it is imperative for them to keep their staff updated with the latest. So, they cash in on the e-commerce transactional functionality and other related tasks. The organization is more concerned on the growth of knowledge of their staff so that the knowledge can be accessed and reused by them. Hence, those indulge in e-learning are able to concentrate and focus their knowledge gained in a meaningful and relevant way for the growth of the organization. So, basically the demand to survive among the fittest is the driving force behind the compelling need to opt for e-learning. When such knowledge is achieved through e-learning, the organization is in a position to skillfully and tactically manage it, capture and store it and make it accessible in a positive method. There are continuous efforts to bloom the field of e-learning through various ways such as focusing on more learning objects that offer access to a single learning objective. I am a physician from India who has been following the technology industry for the past 4 years. Users are gradually moving from desktop applications to internet rich applications. Web 2.0 sites are on the rise. Blogging has reached phenomenal heights. 2003: 1. I browsed from internet cafés on slow dial up connections. 2. My net usage was 20 hours per week. 3. I never heard the words “Blog”, “Digg” and “You tube”. 4. My primary email was Yahoo and secondary one was Hotmail. 5. Primary search engine was Google. 6. I spent 40% of my browsing time on Yahoo, 15% on Google, 15% on MSN networks. 7. Email took about 40% of my net usage. 8. Microsoft was a giant at that time.9. E Donkey was my major P2P application.10. Internet explorer was my major browser.2007: 1. I am surfing internet from my home on broad band connection. 2. My net usage is 100 hours per week. 3. I am maintaining 24 blogs and 1 website. Digg is my primary source for technology news.4. My primary email is Gmail. Yahoo mail is my secondary one. 4. Primary search engine is Google. 5. 90% Internet users are in Top 20 countries
According to Internet world stats report (september 2006), 90% of total internet users are located in top 20 countries. Total internet users are 1.08 billion approximately (16.7%) world population. 0.9 billion net users are situated in top 20 countries .It illustrates the wide gap in the technology usage among developed and developing countries. US leads with 207 million users while china occupies second place with 123 million users. Japan,India and Germany occupied next places. Indian Mobile industry is booming
India is in 5 th place in mobile subscribers behind China, America, Russia and Japan. It may soon going to cross Japan and Russia. All this happened within a short span of 6 years. This is mainly due to low prices, booming economy and aggressive marketing. Indians who are slow to adopt new technologies surprisingly embraced these mobiles, including my parents. India may soon reach third place if this growth continued. Mobile became the necessary commodity for Indians. Nokia already established manufacturing base in Chennai. LG, Samsung and Motorola may soon follow Nokia path. 75% of Indian mobile market is occupied by Nokia followed by motorola with 13%. Nokia and motorola achieved this growth by releasing low end mobiles with basic features. Samsung and Sony Ericcson are mainly targeted at high end users.
